Drawbacks to Life on the Golf Course

And Maybe Some Positives Too!

Your first inclination to life on the golf course seems luxurious, elegant, and exclusive. With so many golf courses around Brunswick County including Sea Trail golf course and the Sandpiper Bay as well as Jaguars Lair, there are also homes interspersed throughout the golf course. Many people look for golf course homes and once they purchase, they may have different thoughts about it. I want my buyers to be well aware when purchasing any type of home and is specifically golf course homes. There are things that you may not have ever thought of when living on the golf course. Sure, you can head out any time of the day, book a tee time, and not have to go very far, but there are some drawbacks as well. Now, while I’m not necessarily discouraging you from living on the golf course as it is my job to sell your house, I do want you to be aware of some of the disadvantages that most people don’t realize until they live there.

Drawbacks to Life on the Golf Course

#1. Lawn maintenance at 5:30 AM.

A lot of people don’t even think about the upkeep it takes to maintain a golf course. Most of the maintenance is also done before tee time.

If you like to sleep in, you might be in for a rude awakening very early in the morning when lawnmowers and trimmers start humming.

#2. An excess of birds.

Geese and other birds love to congregate on the golf course for their feeding area and because there are usually no other predators around, you could find a lot of droppings on your sidewalks and in your backyard, not to mention loud squawks.

#3. People walking really close to your property and may be on your property.

That stray ball could come flying into your backyard and a lot of people don’t even mind walking right onto your property to get it. You may find people rummaging through your flowerbeds or in trees so if this is a problem for you, golf course living may not be for you.

#4. There are not a lot of bathrooms out on the golf course.

I will just leave this one here.

#5. Stray balls.

Yep, that’s probably the one you’ve thought of the most. Those stray balls could come right through your dining room window. Several golf courses also have restrictions on people putting up debts or barriers to prevent the balls. This means that those stray balls could make a flight path straight through your living room.

Of course, there are a lot of positives to living on the golf course as well. The prestige of living on a golf course can increase the value of your home. These upscale homes technically will increase in value simply because they are on a golf course or in an elite country club. Resell value may also be a good thing and of course, if you love golf, what better view could you possibly have the looking out onto your favorite fairway each and every morning?

Homes on the Golf Course in Sunset Beach NC

Life on the course screams relaxation, ok maybe not “scream”, but a gentle, calm whisper that life is serene and all is right with the world. Golf is not a high impact, loud sport so naturally homes near a golf course are desired by those longing for a peaceful environment. You already want to be by the ocean but golf AND the ocean is just the perfect combination. 

Sunset Beach has 5 golf courses all within close proximity of each other and many have homes and properties running throughout the course. If you’re looking for a home on the golf course in Sunset Beach, here are your options and general prices. 

Let’s start with Sandpiper Bay Golf Course. Located north of town off Old Georgetown Rd., this course is non-gated and has numerous homes in Sandpiper Cove and Sandpiper Landing as well as apartments and condos in Sunset Village. Nearly every home has golf course views and sits right on the fairways. These homes start about $170,000 to $400,000 and the majority were built between 2000 and 2005. HOA dues are about $70-$100 per month. You’ll find a variety of sizes from 1600 square feet to over 4,000 square feet. Average home price here is about $260,000.

Sea Trail Golf Links is one of the largest in the area stretching from Old Georgetown Rd to Sunset Blvd. This golf resort also has a convention center and two clubhouses. About a half of all the homes in this community are on the course. Prices range from $190,000 to $500,000 with the average home price around $320,000 but there are several in a wide range of styles and designs. This is not a gated community but most traffic will only be residents. Homeowners dues are low at just $40 per month. The club features three courses, pro shops, gallery, tournaments and a golf school. There are even guest suits perfect for friends or family that come to visit. 

Oyster Bay Golf Links is located west of town off Shoreline Dr. and is one of the smallest. Although this community is not gated it is private property and only residents and their guests are allowed in the neighborhood. There is a small enclave of homes from $200,000 to over $500,000 and all are custom built between 1995 and 2005. HOA dues vary between nothing and $40 per month. These homes are on larger lots and many have forested lots on the course. 

Other courses close by include the Thistle Golf Club and the Pearl Golf links, which have a few homes around the exterior of the course.
