Holden Beach Homes for Sale

Holden Beach is located in North Carolina just south of South Brunswick between Ocean Isle Beach and Oak Island.  It is an island between the intracoastal waterway and the Atlantic Ocean. This coastal town is home to about 600 residents and is one of the smaller, quieter seaside towns in Brunswick County.

In 1954, this small island had about 300 homes and a turn bridge. After Hurricane Hazel, rebuilding was slow. The island was incorporated as Holden Beach in 1986 and dedicated a new high-rise steel and concrete bridge allowing better access to the now more than 1900 homes on the island. Even though there are less than 600 residents, there are over 2300 housing units due to seasonal activity and tourists.

Holden Beach has been nationally recognized as one of the premier family beaches in the US. With a small commercial area, primarily residential neighborhood, Holden Beach is a great place to relax, unwind and enjoy the natural wildlife that surrounds the area.

BEACH PROTECTION

The line of sand dunes on the south side of Ocean Boulevard along with beach vegetation provide some protection from annual storms. Local officials ask that people do not walk over the dunes to get to the ocean but to use the walkways, boardwalks and ramps. Only emergency vehicles are allowed to drive on the beach.

A popular place along the coast is at the east end of the island along McRae Street. This is a great place to fish, wade and beach comb but it can be risky for swimming.  Officials asked that jet skis only operated outside 500 feet from the shore and not to ride onto the beach strand. You can see that officials are very careful about protecting the wildlife and the natural vegetation that keeps Holden Beach protected during most of the year.
