If you’re planning a move over the next few weeks, chances are, you’re a little stressed about packing and unpack before the Holiday’s. While there is no magic wand that you can wave to instantly pack up your home and prepare to move into another, there are a few different tips and tricks that can help you stay organized while packing, and ultimately eliminate a lot of the stress that is often associated with moving.
Tips for Packing During the Holidays
Pack by Room
Packing by room is one of the easiest ways to stay organized while packing. While you might be tempted to try and cram as much as possible in each box, grabbing trinkets from other rooms to fill empty spaces, try your best to keep each room in its own designated boxes. By doing this you can easily put each box right into the room at the new house instead of having to sort through the boxes as they become unpacked.
Buy Extra Supplies
Regardless of how many boxes and rolls of tape you think you need; it is always best to try and purchase more. By purchasing extra rolls of bubble wrap and a few extra boxes, you are avoiding a last-minute trip to the store to purchase additional supplies which can drastically cut into your packing time.
Declutter and Donate
When it comes to moving this is a prime time to declutter and donate. There is no sense in moving items and belongings that aren’t used or wanted. Try making a pile of unwanted goods and donate them to your local Goodwill or thrift shop. You’re not only making your move a little easier, but you’re also giving others the opportunity to find new treasures. It’s a win-win situation!
Separate the Essentials
The one exception to packing your house by room is by making an essentials box. Suggestions for an essentials box include things such as:
- Toilet paper
- A change of clothes and pajamas for each member of your family
- Pet food/supplies if you have a pet friendly home
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Shower supplies
- Water bottles and snacks
- Contact solution or glasses if needed
- Night creams or face wash
Each essentials box can look different depending on your family. Try making a list of the items you use on a daily basis and use that list to help create an essentials box that suits your family.
By implementing just these few tips you’ll find that packing and moving goes much smoother, allowing you the time to truly organize your move, and make the unpacking process smoother.
