Sunset Beach Summer Farmers Market 2019

May 29, 2019 by Karen Baker 2 Comments

I can’t tell you how excited I am to welcome back the Sunset Beach Summer Market. I feel all hints of frost and cold are behind us and now we are headed on to summer.Sunset Beach Summer Farmers Market 2019

The Sunset Beach Summer Market starts on May 2 through October 10 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM every Thursday at 206 Sunset Boulevard. It may be humble, but it is one of my favorite places to visit on a Thursday around Sunset Beach North Carolina. Not only are we a beautiful coastal town but we have local artisans and merchants ready to talk about their wares, share some delicious food, and it’s a great place to stock up your groceries for the week. I don’t know about you, but my weekly meal planning doesn’t start until Thursday. I Peru’s the market and see what’s going on and then decide on my menu based on what is local and in season that week.

The Sunset Beach Summer Market is put on by “Pure Market”, which provides local growers and artisans a venue to sell their goods to customers and encourages the use of local products and locally prepared foods.

The market sponsors and Sunset Beach Holiday Markets have introduced the “Giving Tree” project. This is where donors receive a gift from a vendor in exchange for their donation. Last year, Pure Markets was able to present $1400 to principal Rhonda Benton of West Brunswick high school for their student fund. This is used to meet the needs of underprivileged students. There always looking for some local charities and worthy organizations to share in the “Giving Tree”.

So what kind of things are we likely to see at the market?

Some of my favorite things are the local honey, freshly baked breads and goods, which makes excellent breakfast croissants, danishes, cupcakes for dessert, or just your sandwich bread for the week, beautifully scented and homemade natural candles, wood crafting items, jewelry and pottery, and of course all the local bounty in season. I think the first of the year were likely to see some peas, radishes, and all types of lettuces. By the end of summer, you’re looking at squash, apples, carrots, and root vegetables. I love building my menu around what’s available, sustainable, and in season.

Speaking of, strawberries are in season right now and I’d love to share with you my favorite salad recipe with strawberry vinaigrette.

Fresh Salad with Strawberry Vinaigrette

Pick any type of fresh, tender lettuces, pea tendrils, broccoli and cauliflower that is maybe flowered a little bit, chive flowers, and any other types of greens, spinach, and mache Pilot up on a plate and then top with fresh sliced strawberries, feta or goat cheese crumbles, any type of chopped nuts, herbs such as mint, basil, cilantro, and parsley, chopped chives, sliced radishes, and then drizzle with the vinaigrette.

Strawberry Vinaigrette:

put in a blender 4 to 7 large strawberries, a teaspoon or tablespoon of apple cider vinegar or red wine vinegar, a tablespoon of honey or another sweetener, a teaspoon of lemon juice, a dash of salt and pepper, and then about a quarter to a third of a cup of olive oil. Blend on high until completely emulsified and then drizzle over your salad.

I’m telling you, this is the freshest and most delicious spring/summer salad.
Enjoy! I look forward to seeing you at the farmers market throughout the summer.

Ocean Isle Beach Broke Ground on New Town Hall

May 7, 2019 by Karen Baker Leave a Comment

Ocean Isle Beach Broke Ground on New Town Hall

Ocean Isle Beach wants to build a new town hall just off of the island and the town has borrowed $5.7 million from First Bank to finance the project. The new town hall recently broke ground with Mayor Debbie Smith and pro team Dean Walters and commissioners Betty Williamson, Wayne Rowell, Carolyn Blythe, and Dave Green. They had a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, April 16 at 10:00 AM at the new location at 111 Causeway Dr. The Townhall will offer more parking and room for employees. The decision has come after concerns for a permanent structure off the island in case of a hurricane. The board of commissioners approved the project back in March.

Other news in Ocean Isle Beach includes the naming of their newest Park. The park is located at 11 E. 2nd St. and they’re holding a contest to name the park. Entries will be accepted from May 1, 2019, through August 2, 2019, and suggestions for Park names must not infringe on any trademarks or licensed products. An in-house committee will select 10 to 20 names out of all the entries and forwarded to the town of Ocean Isle Beach board of commissioners which will then select the winning name. The winner will be announced on August 13 at a board of commissioners meeting. The grand prize winner will get a gift basket filled with local treasures.

In other Park news, Island Park has completed its renovations and now have access open to the public.

Feel free to visit the Ocean Isle Beach Facebook page to stay abreast of all the latest information, events, and news around Ocean Isle beach.

Best Restaurants in Sunset Beach and What to Order

March 26, 2019 by admin Leave a Comment

You don’t have to go too far for great restaurants and food right here in Sunset Beach. Nearly all of our restaurants are within a couple block radius on the intracoastal waterway along Sunset Boulevard north. But what are the best places and what should you get? Whether you are a new be, local, or visitor, here’s some of our favorites.

Mavericks Java – located at 303 Sunset Boulevard north, this is the perfect place for brunch or breakfast or maybe just a great cup of coffee. If you’re looking for traditional omelettes, pancakes, and muffins, this is your comfort stop all week long. But, if you need something on the go, their breakfast sandwiches are great as well. They’re open every day of the week until 2 PM and if you need a good blended iced coffee, freshly brewed decaf, or foamy cappuccino, stop into Mavericks Java. You can also pick up a box of their coffee cakes, desserts, or muffins for a little snacking at home.

Simply BBQ

Simply Barbecue – located at 3240 Holden Beach Rd., which is the only one located outside of town but well worth the mention, is one of the best barbecue spots around and it’s a food truck, so you never know where they may end up. Technically they are a food truck but are primarily located next to the BB & T branch on the Holden Beach Causeway near to the entrance of the Harbour Island minigolf. Some of our favorites include the smoky ribs, baked beans, and spicy potato salad. Make sure you get an apple crisp on your way out and their sauces are both vinegary and sweet depending on how you like it. We love brisket so we often will stop in for a pound of brisket and simply take it home to munch on all week long.

Crabby Oddwater

Crabby Oddwaters – located at 310 Sunset Boulevard this tried-and-true local place has been here for decades. If you want true waterfront dining and Sunset Beach, this is it. While many places boast a farm to table mantra, Crabby’s is from ocean to plate. For a taste of true seafood check out some of our favorite dishes at Crabby’s including the Crabby Oddwater combo including salmon, shrimp, and scallops served with olive oil and fresh herbs. Of course, we usually don’t miss the she-crab soup in a velvety cream based sauce with Sherry. If you’re going to share something, check out one of their buckets, which comes with corn, potatoes, sausage, and butter. And for something truly unique, there softshell crab sandwich with occasional remoulade is amazing.

Fibber McGee

Fibber McGee’s – This local favorite is found along Sunset Boulevard up on the corner of Seaside Road. If you’re looking for some good old-fashioned Irish pub fair, this is great. We love it when it gets sunny and warm outside so that we can sit alfresco and enjoy a plate of their nachos, Ruben spring rolls, fried green tomatoes and their delicious slow roasted prime rib sandwich. These are just some of our favorites but if you’re into seafood, they make amazing shrimp tacos and a salmon BLT. Of course, you know they have your favorite Irish draft ready to serve up.

Sarah's Kitchen

Sarah’s Kitchen – located at 1649 Seaside Rd. SW. unit 7, this beach café is a perfect spot for breakfast Monday through Friday. They have huge homemade biscuits, lunch specials, and comfort food favorites such as grilled cheese and tomato soup, meatloaf with mashed potatoes and green beans, or a bowl of homemade broccoli cheddar soup. When we want some traditional home cooking, Sarah’s is where we go.

Will there you have it, some of our favorite restaurants around Sunset Beach and what to eat when you’re there. Have you eaten at any of these places? What were your favorites? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

“Life will lead you to where you belong. Five years ago life led me to meeting Karen Baker at an Open House. Our relationship continues as Karen and her husband Frank have been outstanding not only in helping my husband and I find the right retirement relocation home, but we have watched their commitment in helping many others find their homes. She and Frank treat every client as if they are the only ones that exist. They provide thorough research of areas and homes of interest and present you with the options. They are not your typical hard sell, must-buy-now realtors. They are here to help you find your next home?. You won’t go wrong with the Bakers!

“The Bakers treated us like family during our whirlwind weekend of looking at houses. Prior to our on-site visit to Sunset Beach they created a portal and populated it with properties that met our ever-evolving criteria. By time we arrived we had a good feel for what we could afford and what was available that met our criteria. The Bakers, especially Karen, were able to make sense of what we thought we were looking for and eventually matched us with a house that we ended up purchasing — Karen called it the “This is it” house and she was right. We are loving our 2nd home and appreciate how painless Karen and Frank made the process. All the paperwork was done seamlessly and quickly and the closing went off without a hitch. The Bakers do not believe in the hard sell — they gave us the knowledge we needed and the guidance we needed to make our dream a reality.”

Amy and I have bought and sold four properties in the past twelve years. Both of you are the best realtors we have ever dealt with. Amy and I both felt we could trust you to look out for our interest. The level of service you provided was outstanding, from taking the trash out, helping the buyer with inspecting the irrigation system, dealing with our tenants, always being there if we needed to ask a question, providing constant updates on the market and always keeping us informed on the sale of our house. I think your next venture should be training other realtors, because both of you have mastered the art of providing excellent service. I will be sure to recommend the Frank and Karen team to anybody looking for a trust worthy, knowledgeable and top performing realtor. It was a pleasure working with both of you.”
